An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 6 midwife to work within the Antenatal and Newborn Screening service.
The post holder will work closely with the Specialist Midwife ensuring that the National Antenatal and Newborn Screening programme is delivered effectively within the service at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. In addition to this the role requires the individual to work with the wider multidisciplinary team including GUM services, gastroenterology services, Tertiary Fetal Medicine Services and the Manchester Sickle Cell and Thalassemia centre.
Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential as this is a very busy but unique role that will allow the successful applicant to develop skills in the management of service that affects all areas of maternity care at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of this role is to support the Antenatal Screening Coordinator to deliver the NHSE antenatal and newborn screening programmes . In Collaboration with the screening coordinator and the midwifery and neonatal team deal with a range of issues including:
Support women to discuss and make choices during pregnancy when there are additional concerns.
counselling women and couples about high risk screening results
follow-up plans for babies born to women who have positive infectious diseases screening results mainly HIV and hepatitis
babies with known or undiagnosed anomalies
babies with suspected chromosome abnormalities

-Under the guidance of the antenatal and newborn screening coordinator - report outcomes of all screen positive results to the appropriate national body.
-Assist with data collection for the quarterly and annual KPIs.
-Contribute to the development and delivery of training within the maternity service. Including the induction of new starters.
-To be able to support staff in all areas of the service with issues related to antenatal and newborn screening.
-Access all Trust and Maternity Unit Mandatory training in line with Maternity Unit and the wider Trust Training Policy and maintain own essential training requirements and continuing professional development needs.
-Assist with the management of failsafe procedures to give assurance that the screening service adheres to National standards and recommendations.
-Identify quality improvement and development opportunities within the screening service.
-Assess complex individual patient care needs and develop an effective care plan.
-Offer women with complex screening issues continuity of care.
-Manage the screening service in the absence of the Antenatal and Newborn Screening Coordinator.
