An exciting 12 month fixed-term/secondment opportunity has arisen for a committed and self-motivated Consultant Midwife within the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS). We are looking for an experienced midwife with strong leadership skills who can lead clinicians and our wider teams to scope out NWAS provision of maternity care across the region. The successful applicant will liaise closely with services across our footprint which includes 23 Obstetric Units, 7 Stand Alone birth centres, one community midwifery service and all homebirth services.

This post is being advertised as a secondment opportunity but will also be open to applicants who want to consider a 12 month fixed term contract. We are open to consideration of flexible working arrangements.

Main duties of the job
NWAS currently provides both telephone and face to face maternity care within a geographical footprint that extends 5 counties, (by a range of ambulance staff including paramedics, and non-registered ambulance staff), with the capability to include the NHS 111 service within its portfolio.

The Consultant Midwife role will provide overall maternity care professional leadership responsibility across NWAS (including urgent and emergency care). The reach of the service covers 23 acute maternity sites (Obstetric Units), 7 Stand Alone birth centres (Midwifery Led Units without doctors present), one community midwifery service and all homebirth services.

In the function of Consultant, the role provides expert clinical and strategic leadership. This includes developing a trust-wide strategy for midwifery services, setting standards and guidelines for maternity and midwifery practice, in keeping with NMC and national policy documents and guidance.

About us
North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust provides 24 hour, 365 days a year accident and emergency services to those in need of emergency medical treatment and transport.

Our highly skilled staff provide life-saving care to patients in the community and take people to hospital or a place of care if needed.

We also provide non-emergency patient transport services for those patients who require non-emergency transport to and from hospital and who are unable to travel unaided because of their medical condition or clinical need.

Alongside the other emergency services, we also work to ensure the safety of the public and treatment of patients in the event of a major incident.

We also deliver the NHS 111 service in the North West. NHS 111 replaced NHS Direct in 2013. This service was introduced to make it easier for people to access local NHS healthcare services in England. It provides non-emergency medical help fast, and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
