SHEFFIELD TEACHING HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST
Job Ref:
190-1307-DIR

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s largest, busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in Sheffield, as well as specialist care for patients from further afield. We manage five of Yorkshire’s best known teaching hospitals including: Northern General Hospital, Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, West Park Cancer Hospital and Jessop Wing Maternity Hospital. We have a long history of providing high quality care, clinical excellence and innovation in medical research. We provide around one million appointments and operations every year, offering almost all treatments available on the NHS.

With around 18,000 employees, we are one of the biggest employers locally. We aim to reflect the diversity of local communities and are proud of our new and existing partnerships with local people, patients, neighbouring NHS organisations, local authority and charitable bodies. With more than 70 professions and a wide range of jobs, we are the second largest employer in Sheffield. Our hospitals specialise in adult care, although we do look after new-born and premature babies. We then provide limited specialist services for children (around 4,500 every year) mainly in dental and ophthalmology departments. We work closely with Sheffield Children’s Hospital, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University to ensure we are always at the cutting edge of medical research and development to benefit patients in Sheffield and across the country.

As well as being home to one of three Major Trauma Centres for the Yorkshire and Humber region, we have a number of specialist medical and surgical services, many of which we are internationally renowned for. These include cancer treatment, spinal injuries, neurology, cardiology and stereotactic radiosurgery to name but a few.

The Jessop Wing opened in 2001 and is a purpose-built maternity unit where approximately 7,000 babies are born every year. In addition to a 22-bed labour ward, there are three postnatal wards and one antenatal ward, an admission Triage area and a High Dependency Unit. One of the postnatal wards specialises in caring for women who have had a caesarean section. In addition, the Jessop Wing Community Midwifery Service attend approximately 200 homebirths per year.

The Jessop Wing also provides neonatal intensive care and special care for sick and premature babies born in Sheffield and those transferred from other units who require this expertise.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is now seeking a new Nurse Director and Head of Midwifery for the LEGION care group (Laboratory Medicine, Medical Imaging and Medical Physics, Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Neonatology).

This is the most senior midwife within the Trust and so will be a key member of the Nurse Executive Group.

As the Head of Midwifery and Nurse Director, this role provides professional leadership and oversight for the midwifery and nursing staff within the care group and has responsibility for the patient experience and clinical governance. As part of the senior leadership team the Head of Midwifery / Nurse Director is also jointly responsible for the strategic development of the care group, overall staff engagement and ensuring that staff behaviours are aligned to the Trust values.

The Trust is looking for a talented individual who is a Registered Midwife, and ideally a Registered Nurse who can bring passion, leadership, compassion, service development experience, professional challenge and support for this role.
