Midwife Band 6

We have one permanent posts 34.50 – 37.50 hours and one temporary post 37.50 hours

An exciting opportunity has arisen for band 6 registered midwives to join our rotational team for Wirral University Teaching Hospital. You will be experienced, enthusiastic and caring and must be able to work autonomously, demonstrating excellent clinical skills to provide effective, individualized women centered care.

The successful candidate will be autonomous practitioner and should take responsibility for the provision of care throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods for women and babies in the hospital setting. They will be responsible for the assessment, planning and implementation of care to both high and low risk women in the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period. This individual will support the team/ward in the effective management of the clinical area. They will support, supervise and teach staff evidence based client centred care, which is of a high standard. They are responsible for ensuring that all care is delivered according to Trust policies and procedures maintaining associated records care.


The community midwifery teams at WUTH provides care to approximately 3200 women and their families in the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period low and high-risk women per year, encompassed within the unit is a Level 3 Unit for Neonatal Services, Children’s Services and Women’s Unit. We have a reputation for innovation in providing high-quality care to women in a hospital/community setting.

Our Midwives have a passionate philosophy for promoting normality and ensuring high standards of care and birth experiences for all women accessing our Maternity Service. The Eden Suite Birth Centre consists of five birthing rooms, two with Ensuite birthing pools. In addition, a further birthing pool within the Delivery Suite provides individualised, holistic care to high-risk women along with a further eight delivery rooms. We currently have a pilot “pop up” MLU called the Highfield Team, concentrating services in the community setting. We have a dedicated Triage Team and numerous specialist roles. This allows extensive scope for personal development on progression.

If you are dedicated to being responsible for providing personal, evidence-based and individualised midwifery care, then this could be the post for you. You must have completed your preceptorship. You should have excellent interpersonal skills and a clear demonstration of the ability to provide personalised maternity care. You should have a clear commitment to current developments and initiatives within the Midwifery arena and sound knowledge of current issues in the public health agenda.

About the Role…

The successful applicant will work in rotation within the maternity unit to include delivery suite, Ward 53 (antenatal and postnatal) along with Triage and the Midwifery Led Unit. It will be in a shift pattern to include weekends and night duties.

You must be driven and motivated to work within our team of midwives to provide the highest quality of midwifery care. We are striving to achieve continuity of carer model throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period and we are committed as a Trust to implement Better births, therefore you must be flexible to work within these models as a Band 6 midwife.

What we’re looking for…

The successful applicant will be passionate about midwifery care and needs to hold current registration as a Registered Midwife with the NMC. You will need to demonstrate your commitment to ongoing professional development within your role, with a commitment to working as part of a team and willing to demonstrate a high standard of evidence based midwifery care in line with local and national initiatives.

Successful candidates will benefit from in house mandatory training, teaching, on-going support from professional Midwifery Advocates (PMA) and professional development to help you deliver the best innovative service and improvements for women and their families throughout their pathway. You will work closely with the Obstetric teams, matrons, existing specialist midwives and other MDT members

If successful in this role, there is a requirement for you to have a standard/enhanced DBS. This will be paid for by the Trust and then deducted from your salary over a period of 3 month.

As this vacancy is within the division of Women’s and Children’s, there is a mandatory requirement for successful applicants to join the DBS update service. The cost of joining the update service is £13 per year, and applicants are liable to cover this cost with no reimburse
