Council Members

Help shape the future of nursing and midwifery care

We are seeking four talented and committed people to join our Council, the governing body of the NMC.

We want our Council to reflect the diversity of our communities and the professions we regulate and are keen to hear from people from all backgrounds and walks of life with the right skills and expertise to help drive forward our strategic vision.

What we do

We are the professional regulator of the UK’s 690,000 registered nurses, midwives and, in England, nursing associates. We work to ensure these professionals have the knowledge and skills to deliver consistent, quality care that keeps people safe.

We want to support the professionals on our register to make an even greater difference for the benefit of people using health and social care services across the UK. We are working with the public, professionals and our partners from all four countries of the UK to co-produce a new five year strategy 2020–2025 that will help us achieve our ambition.

This is an exciting opportunity to play your part in overseeing translation of the strategy into real change for the benefit of the public we serve and the professions we regulate.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for two lay members and two registrant members (current nurses, midwives or nursing associates) from all parts of the UK. One of the four roles must be filled by someone who lives or works in Northern Ireland.

Ideally, you will have one or more of the following:

● Strategic level oversight or experience of advocating for others and/or representing the views and interests of people who use public services or consumers; and/or

● Experience at a strategic level of overseeing or shaping the provision of nursing or midwifery services whether in the independent health and/or social care sectors and/or the NHS; and/or

● Strategic understanding of digital innovation and the ability to develop insights into how it might transform the work of the professions we regulate, and what that means for how we work; and/or

● Experience at a strategic level of overseeing or leading major organisational and/or cultural change in a large organisation.

In addition, you will be committed to upholding good governance and the values of public life. You need to be able to devote 3 days a month to the Council; in return we pay an annual allowance (currently £14,724 a year).

You will be joining an ambitious, forward-thinking Council determined to ensure our strategy makes a difference to the health and care of all our communities.
