MidStart 2020 Campaign

NSW Health is the largest employer of student midwives. We are currently recruiting student midwives for positions in a large number of NSW public health facilities.

Student midwives are registered nurses (with current registration with the Nurses and Midwives Board of Australia). The program involves employment as a student midwife in a NSW public health facility whilst studying a graduate midwifery diploma at university.

Benefits include:
Employment whilst studying at university
Consolidated clinical support and experience to meet requirements for midwifery registration
Release for university face to face program as required
Ability to choose training Hospitals and Universities

What you will do:

As a student midwife, you will be required to provide midwifery care across the maternity service, under the supervision of registered midwives. You will work a 7 day rotating roster (day and night shifts). You will also undertake Continuity of Care experiences involving establishing, maintaining and concluding a professional relationship with a number of women through their pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postnatal period. Time spent providing Continuity of Care will, from time to time, be on top of your contracted hours of employment

Training Hospitals and Universities

Local Health Districts have partnership arrangements in place with specific universities, not all universities. Before you start your application, you should check with universities and Hospitals to ensure that your preferred university provider and training hospital have such an arrangement in place. Contact Universities and Hospitals before you commence your application.

Training in rural hospitals may include periods of rotation to larger facilities to ensure you gain the required clinical experience. As you will be required to complete Continuity of Care experiences as well as your rostered shifts the distance required to travel to your preferred hospital is also something for you to consider.
