The Taranaki District Health Board (TDHB) is the primary provider of health services to approx 118,000 people of the Taranaki Region.

At Taranaki Base hospital there is a delivery suite that provides both antenatal and labour care and consists of six birthing rooms and seven antenatal beds. There is an 18-21 bed Post Natal ward. The Neo Natal Unit is a level 2A unit with 6 cots to provide care to babies from 28 weeks gestation.

The successful candidate will provide midwifery care based predominantly at Taranaki Base maternity unit in New Plymouth, working as part of a multidisciplinary team in the antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal ward or Neo Natal Unit. Occasionally there may be times where you will be required to work at Hawera Hospital to ensure the best possible outcome is achieved for the women and their families. Hawera Hospital provides outpatient antenatal clinics and primary maternity care for women within the area. There is one primary birthing room, facilitating approximately 80-90 births per year under the care of a Lead Maternity Carer. Additionally there are four primary postnatal rooms to provide inpatient postnatal care for Hawera births and postnatal transfers from Taranaki Base Hospital.

Around 1500 Primary and Secondary births per year occur throughout Taranaki. Six obstetricians provide secondary maternity care at Taranaki Base hospital, two of which are visiting specialists to Hawera hospital. Community self employed midwives and a local GP access the Hawera primary maternity facility to provide primary maternity care services.

The ideal candidates may also choose to provide a small caseload of self employed LMC services in the area and will have the following attributes:
• Hold a current New Zealand Midwifery registration and Annual Practicing Certificate.
• Minimum of one year postgraduate experience.
• Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Have a commitment to quality assurance and accreditation principles.
• Be able to work rostered shifts in all areas of the maternity unit: antenatal, labour and the postnatal ward.

The Maternity Unit is family centred and the staff are committed to providing a quality service. The goal of the Unit is to provide the mother with a safe and positive birthing experience with the necessary knowledge and skills to enable her and her family to care for their baby, with there being an emphasis on parenting skills and breastfeeding.
