An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Governance Midwife to work in collaboration with the multidisciplinary governance team to lead on contemporary governance issues such as serious incident investigation, external reporting to relevant agencies and the review and analysis of outcome reports received by the Trust. They will work in partnership with women and families, patients, carers and the multidisciplinary team to create an environment in which improving the quality of the service delivered is paramount.

Main duties of the job

To work in partnership with women and families, patients, carers, and the multi-disciplinary team to create an environment in which improving the quality of the service delivered is paramount. The job description will be adapted as per the service needs as this post evolves.

About us
The Directorate of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatology is based at the Jessop Wing which is linked to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The maternity unit has over 6800 births per year and is a Regional Tertiary Maternity Service with a Level 3 Neonatal Unit of 44 cots. A tertiary Gynae-Oncology service and a changing Gynaecology Service, which includes an Assisted Conception Unit, complete the services within the Directorate.

Job responsibilities
Promote the timely reporting by staff members of all maternity service clinical incidents.
Review and approve clinical incidents on DATIX to support improved quality of care and a reduction in clinical risk.
Collate incident statistics and monitor trends from adverse incidents.
Communicate relevant findings to promote an environment which learns from incident reporting.
Participate in the seamless investigation of all serious untoward incidents as instructed by Line manager/Matron
Work in collaboration with the patient and their significant others
Reporting incidents to other agencies where appropriate via the Trust Risk Management Lead
Maintain the maternity service Risk Register
Deputise as required at the Trust Safety and Risk Management Board
Participate in the delivery of departmental training programmes in relation to Healthcare Governance
The production of a quarterly risk management report
Develop clinical policies and guidelines to support risk management and clinical effectiveness, and ensure archiving of all old policies
Support the Directorate where necessary in preparation for other external assessments
Provide a local focus for advice and support regarding risk management issues
Drive the Health and Safety agenda within the Directorate

Skills & Knowledge
Essential
Proven leadership skills
Knowledge of audit, research and service improvement
Ability to communicate effectively including active listening, writing and verbal skills,
High level of IT skills
Persuasion and influencing skills - ability to present ideas and proposals effectively
Ability to handle difficult situations with tact and diplomacy
Desirable
knowledge of national policy in relation to maternity services
Experience
Essential
Midwifery Experience in all areas including extended clinical competencies
Evidence of successfully resolving compex problems
Experience of knowledge of dealing with complaints/incidents

Evidence of delivering high quality teaching to multi-disciplinary audiences
Experience with the use of the datix system
Education & Qualifications
Essential
Practicing Midwife with first degree
NMC registered
Teaching and assessing qualification
